The Whiteside Mountain hike is considered moderate. While the trail is relatively short, it does include some rocky sections and elevation changes. Proper footwear is recommended, and hikers should be prepared for a bit of climbing to reach the stunning overlooks.
Sunset Rock is a popular spot for a short hike with a great view, and just a few hundred yards from downtown Highlands. Head east down Main Street for .5 miles toward Horse Cove until you reach the Nature Center on the left. Park on the gravel on the right side of the road. You will see large signs for the trailhead. The trail to sunset rock is a .5 mile hike up a gravel road. Sunset Rock is an ideal choice for a late afternoon stroll. Beautiful sunsets can be seen over the town, while you sit on a natural amphitheater of slabs of granite. This property is owned by the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust.
The Glen Falls Trail is a moderate hike. There are many great viewpoints of teh waterfall from different vantage points. Depending on how long you spend enjoying the falls, the hike typically takes 1.5-2 hours and is about 2.8 miles. The trail ends with a campsite. If you wish to turn back after the falls, you may do so as there are no great views beyond the waterfall.
